Glen Williams History

"As early as 1847, Glen Williams was described to be a ‘beautiful spot’ by the British Wig” quotes historian Mark Rowe. Toronto Life magazine describes the Ontario hamlet as being a “visual feast”. With its historic buildings, artisan mill housing over thirty artists of all types, including a dedicated glass blowing studio, bakery and pub, one of the largest Canada Day celebrations in the country, the Glen has much to offer the weary traveler.
Founded in 1883 by Benajah Williams, a United Empire Loyalist from New York, Glen Williams quickly grew to become a thriving community based on grist, lumber and woolen mills. Many of these buildings still exist today and make up the historic and quaint nature of the community. The old lumber and grist mill is home to artists, the general store where Timothy Eaton got his start is now a show case of Canadian folk along with hooked rugs and supplies. Come visit and meander with the Credit river as it makes its way through this idyllic community which has so much to offer.

2008 Glen Williams Canada Day Parade

For Canada's 141st birthday, in what has become a mainstay of Canada Day celebrations the Glen Williams Canada Day Parade went off without a hitch. Special arrangements were made to slow construction on the bridge over the Credit River (on the parade route) until after July 1st, so the parade followed it's traditional route down Confederation Street and into the village. It was a perfect day and the streets were lined with many people in record numbers.

2008 Canada Day Duck Race

The Glen Williams Town Hall Board was proud to present its 59th Canada Day Celebration and the 13th annual Duck Race down the Credit River. In 13 years through the enthusiastic work of our volunteers, sponsors and citizens we have raised over $100,000 and all net proceeds go to charitable causes.
This year the proceeds of the race went to Georgetown District High School for a new electronic sign. Canada Day at “The Glen” is a Halton Hills tradition.

About the GWCA

The hamlet of Glen Williams is a unique treasure in these times of hectic pace and rapid compact development. We enjoy a pleasant community reminiscent of simpler times when neighbours were friends and streets were safe.

Governments at all levels are under constant pressure to change. Properly and reasonably implemented change can be very beneficial. Change can be focused or redirected to serve a greater good in the community. The best way to achieve this is to be part of the process and ensure the desires of the neighbourhood are known and respected.

Years ago a group of your neighbours shared their concerns about the designation of the core area of Glen Williams as a heritage site and the impact that would have on the character of the village. They ralleyed enough support and convinced the right parties this move was not in the best interests of Glen Williams. This success prompted the creation of the GWCA as a recognised voice of the community.

Members of the GWCA spent countless hours researching issues; attending meetings and lobbying officials over a four year period in the development and ultimate success of the Glen Williams Secondary Plan. This plan clearly establishes rules and limits on the ability of any government body or developer to come into our community and destroy the unique character of our hamlet.

The GWCA was successful in having Wildwood road declassified from “arterial” to “collector” road status as the former could have permitted the conversion of that road to a highway 7 bypass which could run through the village and join up to 8Th Line on to Maywood. This project is not at rest yet. The true nature of the Wildwood road redevelopment is still being discussed and evaluated. The GWCA is involved again.

The GWCA sponsored a Glen Williams Town Hall public meeting with Halton Hills Planning staff. They outlined proposed roadway redevelopments for the next ten years. This was an opportunity for improvement to get involved in a consultative way early in the process.

The GWCA has recently identified a project to preserve the Glen Williams Wetlands. Other community groups are being invited to form a steering committee to discuss; investigate and hopefully implement a plan.

The GWCA is supporting GlenWilliams.org on the worldwide web. We see this developing into a community communications site. Once again we are inviting other community organizations to join us, contribute to the content and direction of the site. We want to inform our neighbours of community activities and tell the world about the rich heritage and beauty of Glen Williams.

The credibility of the GWCA in political arenas is frequently measured by the size of its membership. Numbers count. You do not have to attend any meetings or pay any fees. We ask only that you send an email to list@GlenWilliams.org . Give us your name and address. We will be honoured to count you among us. Keep an eye on our web site as we get it off the ground.
