CANADA DAY….WE NEED YOUR HELP

CANADA DAY IS COMING
AND WE NEED YOUR HELP

Canada Day could not happen without the help of many volunteers. There are several areas where your assistance would be most welcome.
The more people, the easier the work!

Some of the areas needing help are:
Traffic control (parking, directing, etc.)
Decorating (done the night before)
General assistance in the park
The Strawberry Tea in The Town Hall
Parade – set up (night before) and/or clean up
Pet Show

If you would like to offer your help please call: 905-873-8261 or E-mail:   anthea.hoare009@sympatico.ca

2014 Glen Williams Community Clean-up Day

                                 2014 Glen Williams
                           Community Clean-up Day

On April 26 a small but very enthusiastic group of volunteers came early and cleaned up “The Glen” and did a very good job! Items such as diapers, baseballs, beach balls, and real estate signs were found. Dave Cox’s idea about separating garbage and recyclables was a great idea. We collected more recyclables than garbage. Thanks Dave for the idea!
Also thanks to the Town of Halton Hills for donating garbage bags and gloves.

The Glen Williams Town Hall Board provided coffee, hot chocolate and Timbits to the volunteers.

We’d like to have another clean-up day in the Fall.

Anyone interested please contact Rob Boleychuk ….. boleyr@hotmail.com.

GWTHB Annual Tree & Shrub Sale

Green is the New White
At least we hope so. Record setting polar vortex temperatures, ice and continuous snowfalls: this was a winter to remember. Many people lost precious trees and shrubbery.
But spring has finally arrived and it’s time to replace what was destroyed in the ice storm. On Saturday, May 17, Glen Williams Town Hall is holding its annual tree and shrub sale at St. John’s United Church in Glen Williams.
Sheridan Nurseries has once again donated a variety of shrubs, trees, annuals and perennials for the fundraiser. Interested in Begonias, Petunias, Alyssum, Marigolds? We have ’em.

The sale begins at 8 a.m. and numbers will be available at 7:30 a.m. St. John’s United Church will also be selling muffins and coffee and potted plants. For further information please call Pauline Robinson (905) 873-6760.

A Message from the Canada Day Challenge Team (Department of Canadian Heritage)

Participate in the 2014 Canada Day Challenge now!

Proudly presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Challenge invites youth between 8 and 18 years old (who live in Canada) to express their pride in being Canadian. by submitting an entry inspired by the theme CANADA: STRONG AND FREE.
Enter the contest in the following categories:

-DRAW IT! (submit a poster design)
-SNAP IT!  (submit digital photographs)
-WRITE IT! (submit a piece of creative writing)

Participation can be through schools, clubs, associations, or individual interest!
On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the Canada Day Challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore Canada’s history, culture and identity and to celebrate everything that makes Canada the united, strong and free country it is today.
This year, we also encourage students to learn more about the defining moments that helped to shape our country. For example, in 2014, Canada will mark the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences. These two conferences laid the foundations for Confederation in 1867 and what would eventually become Canada.
Prizes:
Winners from across Canada will be selected for a chance to win great prizes from our partners, including iPad minis and more! Winning entries will also be displayed at the Canadian Museum of Civilization from June to September 2014.
Plus, our partner, Parks Canada, will provide all three national winners (one from each category) with an all-expenses paid grand prize trip for two to Ottawa to visit Canada’s national institutions and to celebrate Canada Day 2014 on Parliament Hill, as well as visit exciting Parks Canada sites in the region.
Check out pictures from last year's grand prize trip online! It was an unforgettable time for our national winners. They were given VIP access to exciting places and they got to meet some of Canada's most inspiring personalities, including the Governor General of Canada, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, and singer Marie Mai! On July 1st, they were treated to VIP seating for both the Canada Day Noon Show and the iconic Evening Show and fireworks display.

And, there’s more! One lucky winner* in the Write It! category will be invited to spend a week in Ottawa with our partner, Encounters with Canada, Canada’s largest youth forum, to learn about Canadian institutions, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience! (*For participants between the ages of 14 and 17 only.)
The Canada Day Challenge is open now and will accept submissions until National Flag Day, February 15, 2014.
Please visit our website at www.challenge.pch.gc.ca to learn more. If you would like to order Canada Day Challenge promotional materials, please send us an email with your mailing address to challenge@pch.gc.ca.
Best of luck to all who participate!
